What was wrong? I decided it was two things. The dark outline around his face and the awful petal rays. Was it supposed to be a flower or a sun?
So out came the dark outline and the petal rays, and in went rainbow outline and rays following the colors on the face. I also went away from straight linear hooking and pebbled the rays like the background. I am loving pebbling, and may have a hard time going back to linear hooking. I've renamed it Sunrise Sunset.

Anyway I like the result. Although it is still not my favorite rug, it taught me a lot about color, value and pebbling. I am still not sure about the darker values of the green on the left side of the face, so I may still do a little value tweaking after I bind off the edges.

I like the improvements! I had the same experience with the challenge rug I just finished hooking. Did some serious reverse hooking. More than any other rug I've ever done! Great learning experience though. I like the colors in your sun.

See, now I like the first version better, but that's just me....I think it was a little more odd and unexpected. The 2nd version is good too....just saying....
It's definitely a sun and the sun is supposed to be hot and your sun sizzles, and you made it your own. I like it. JB
April ~ I like the changes that you have made! The rays are much improved. The way that you blended the colors looks awesome!
I really like both versions. One looks ancient and one modern. Your second version looks almost too hot to touch - great use of color.
Like Tammy, I prefer the first. The subtler colors and the petal shaped rays in the first version hearken back to the stone mosaic that inspired the rug. The eyes are so beautifully hooked.
I really like both of them. It is really hard to decide, but I think I like the first one the best. And I agree with Rughooker that the second one looks too hot to touch. :D It is definitely more in tune with how hot it has been. The pebbled affect is really nice. It gives the rug more life. And those eyes are fabulous!
I also like both. I don't think that you can say honestly that this is the ugliest thing you have ever hooked. All our projects come from love first.

I literally laughed at the thought of either of these being ugly. Of course, we are all entitled to be our own harshest judges. ;) But the petaled rug has a more manmade look to me, like a shaman's mask. The pebbled rays are fabulous. Sorry not to have been to hooking circle today, guess I might have seen it in all of its radiant glory!
